JANUARY

Wethersfield Historical Society Holiday Closure – January 1, 2015

Wethersfield Historical Society will be closed to the public in all our buildings on Thursday, January 1, 2015 in observation of New Year’s Day. We will reopen Friday, January 2, 2015 at 10am.

Keeney Cultural Series, Yale Whiffenpoofs at the Keeney Memorial Cultural Center – January 18, 2015 at 4pm

Sunday, January 18: Yale Whiffenpoofs will perform. Join this gifted a capella group as they humorously and expertly reinterpret popular songs from many eras. The Keeney Cultural Series proudly announces its twenty-second season featuring incredibly gifted artists. Concerts will be held in Keeney Hall Sunday afternoons at 4:00 p.m. at the Keeney Memorial Cultural Center at 200 Main Street, Wethersfield, Connecticut. Tickets for individual concerts are $20.00 for members and $22.00 for non-members. Tickets for the complete series are $52.00 for members or students and $60.00 for non-members.  These concerts are supported by the Robert Allan Keeney Memorial Fund at the Hartford Foundation for public giving.To purchase tickets or for more information please contact the Society at (860) 529-7656. Concert Dates: January 18, February 8 & March 8, 2015. Doors open half hour prior to the show.

FEBRUARY

Lecture Series  – February 2, 2015 at 7pm with Dr. Patrick Hynes, Director of Best Practices Unit at DOC–POSTPONED UNTIL MARCH 23 because of inclement weather

On Monday, February 2 pr 9 at 7pm at the Keeney Memorial Cultural Center Dr. Patrick Hynes, Director of Best Practices Unit at the Department of Correction will present. Admission $5 non-members, Free to Members. Door open at 6:30pm and lecture begins at 7pm.

Keeney Cultural Series, “The Nifty Fifties Band” at the Keeney Memorial Cultural Center – February 8, 2015 at 4pm

February 8 The Nifty Fifties  will play and sing selections from the 50’s and 60’s.  Don’t be surprised if people stand up and dance the “Twist”!  The Keeney Ballroom will be set up with cocktail tables in a cabaret style.  Bring the family or a friend and BYOB.

Lecture Series with Local Prison Expert Frank Winiarski – March 9, 2015 at 7pm with

On Monday, March 9 at 7pm local prison expert Frank Winiarski will present “A Concise History of the Wethersfield State Prison” at the Keeney Memorial Cultural Center. Admission $5 non-members, Free to Members. Door open at 6:30pm and lecture begins at 7pm.

Keeney Cultural Series, “The Savage Brothers” at the Keeney Memorial Cultural Center – March 8, 2015 at 4pm

Sunday, March 8: The Savage Brothers, a gifted cover band who have played in huge venues throughout the northeast.  They will perform with both instruments and voices numerous popular songs from the 60’s through the 80’s.  The Keeney Ballroom will again be set up with cocktail tables in a cabaret style.  Bring the family or a friend and BYOB.

Wethersfield Historical Society will be closed to the public in all our buildings on Sunday, April 5, 2015 in observation of Easter. We will reopen on Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at 10am.

Taste of Wethersfield –  Saturday April 11, 2015, 7-9:30pm at Keeney Memorial Cultural Center

Join us for the social event of the season when Wethersfield Historical Society hosts the tenth annual “Taste of Wethersfield” Benefit. This fashionable fundraiser combines the best food, drink and good community spirit for an evening of fun and merriment. Keeney Kids Spring History Programs

Kids in Grades 1-6 can join us at the Keeney Memorial Cultural Center Monday and Tuesday, March 30 and 31 for two hands on learning experiences, “Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Can You Hear Me Now?” and “Locked Up!  Wethersfield State Prison”.

Lecture Series, “Who Do They Think We Are?” with Judy Dworin Performance Project – April 20, 2014 at 7pm

On Monday, April 20th the Judy Dworin Performance Project will present “Who Do They Think We Are? – Perceptions and Misconceptions of Women and Prison” at the Keeney Memorial Cultural Center. Judy Dworin will discuss her innovative arts outreaches for women at York Correctional Institution, the only state prison for women in CT, and for women returning from York to their communities. She will reflect on how this work informs a different perspective on who is behind the razor wire, examining the positive changes that can and do occur, supporting a rehabilitative and strengths-based approach to incarceration and reentry. Along with her presentation, there will be a short performance by Women on Our Own, a singing and spoken word performance group of women that at one time have been residents at York CI. Under the auspices of the Judy Dworin Performance Project and the musical direction of singer/songwriter Leslie Bird, Women On Our Own have performed in over 20 venues in the Greater Hartford region over the past year, performing to standing ovations at the 2013 Hartford appearance of Piper Kerman (author of “Orange is the New Black,” inspiration of the popular Netflix series) at Hartford Stage. Admission $5 non-members, Free to Members.

Hurlbut-Dunham House & Cove Warehouse Maritime Museum Open for the Season! – Saturday, May 23-October 4

The Hurlbut- Dunham House (212 Main Street ) and Cove Warehouse (located in Cove Park at the North end of Main Street) will open on Saturday, May 34 thru October 3 for the season. Open on Saturday & Sunday, 1-4pm.

All-School Art Show – May 2015

All-School Art Show is back in the Keeney Center once again gracing the Watson Gallery, May Classroom and halls with children’s artwork from the Wethersfield Public Schools for the month of May.

JUNE

House Tours on Connecticut Open House Day – Saturday, June 13, 2015, 10am to 4pm

The Wethersfield Museum at the Keeney Memorial Cultural Center, the Cove Warehouse Maritime Museum, the Hurlbut-Dunham House and the Captain James Francis House will all be open to the public free of charge for CT Open House Day.  The Cove Warehouse, Captain James Francis House and Hurlbut-Dunham House will be open noon-4pm and the Wethersfield Museum at the Keeney Memorial Cultural Center will be open 10am-4pm.  In addition, from 10am-4pm, you can tour some of the beautiful historic homes of Old Wethersfield during our house tour. Check back for house tour locations and prices.

Art League Art Show Open – June 2015

Wethersfield Art League will exhibit thier artwork in the Watson Gallery and hallways of the Keeney in June 2012. Come and see the local talent.

Free Outdoor Concerts! Keeney Koolers Summer Music Program – June 30, 2015!

June 30, July 7, July 14 and July 21 2015, Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m., outside in front of Keeney Memorial Cultural Center. Bring your lawn chair, blanket and a snack to enjoy live music on a summer evening. In case of rain, concerts will be held in the Keeney Ballroom.

Tuesday, June 30: Simply Swing (to be confirmed), sponsored by Farmington Bank, Simply Swing will be joining us for our first summer concert.  They are a 10-piece swing orchestra featuring six swinging horns, a dynamic rhythm section and vocalist Vivian LaRosa performing danceable favorites and recreating memories from the Big Band and Swing Dance eras, including music from Glenn Miller to
Ella Fitzgerald to Diana Krall.

The Keeney Memorial Cultural Center will be closed on July 4 in observation of Independence Day. The Old Academy Research and Genealogical Library will be closed on July 4th.

June 30, July 7, July 14 and July 21 2015, Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m., outside in front of Keeney Memorial Cultural Center. Bring your lawn chair, blanket and a snack to enjoy live music on a summer evening. In case of rain, concerts will be held in the Keeney Ballroom.

Tuesday, July 7: Tirebiter, one of Connecticut’s best known bands returns to our summer series.  The band includes singers, a keyboardist, guitarist, bassist and drummer and will perform a range of popular songs from the 1970s forward.

Tuesday, July 14: The Groove Junkies will join us and share their high energy party atmosphere as they play popular music from the 80s to today and get the crowd up and dancing.

Tuesday, July 21: Number Nine, one of our community’s favorite acts, returns to our series with their popular interpretations of Beatles music.

34th Annual Wethersfield Fall Craft Fair – Saturday, October 3, 10am – 4pm

The weekend of Saturday, October 3 and Sunday, October 4 is the last time the Hurlbut-Dunham House and Cove Warehouse will be open for the Summer season.

14th Annual Wethersfield Antiques Show – November 20 & 21, 2015

Antiques galore available from over 40 quality dealers, “Attic Treasures” from the society and delicious food at the Sunflower Café.
