Ezekiel Porter Johnson did not have an easy childhood. His father, Alexander Johnson, died when Ezekiel was just a kid and Ezekiel was not fond of his new stepfather, Salmon Moulton. To make matters worse, young Ezekiel suffered from poor health. Blazing his own trail, Ezekiel became a doctor and set off for Mexico. What adventures would await him there? Find out by attending Wethersfield Historical Society’s 14th Annual Old Wethersfield Lantern Light Tours.
On this year’s tours, characters from the 19th century will share the diverse experiences of Wethersfield residents during this century of change. Join us on Friday October 13 and Saturday October 14 for this entertaining and educational journey through the Hurlbut-Dunham House, First Church, and the Ancient Burying Ground. All tours depart from the Keeney Memorial Cultural Center (200 Main Street). Tours are available between 6:30pm and 8pm. Tickets are $25.00 and will be available beginning September 1, either on-line through this link to EventBrite or in person at the Old Academy (150 Main Street) between 10am and 4pm, Tuesday through Friday. Ticket quantities are limited to 21 per tour, so get your tickets early.
In the event of inclement weather, provisions have been made to conduct these tours indoors. There is no rain date.
N.B. This approximately 70-minute journey through the past covers about one mile through occasionally uneven terrain and dimly lit areas. Participants are advised to wear good walking shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. This program is not recommended for children under the age of 13.
Old Wethersfield Lantern Light Tours would not be possible without our volunteers, who generously donate their time and talents to bring these stories to life. For their service, we are extremely grateful. We would also like to thank the Robert Allen Keeney Memorial Fund at The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, ShopRite of Manchester & East Hartford, and members of Wethersfield Historical Society for their financial support of this program.
