Gary “Pops” Goldberg-O’Maxfield of Hartford is a member of the Society of American Baseball Research (SABR) and he has been researching baseball in Connecticut for over a decade. He has written numerous articles on baseball and is writing a Connecticut baseball book for Wesleyan University Press.
Goldberg-O’Maxfield is also co-founder and Commissioner of the Friends of Vintage Base Ball (friendsofvintagebaseball.org), a Hartford based, non-profit living history organization. The Friends of Vintage Base Ball created the nationally renown four-team Coltsville Vintage Base Ball League which plays weekly Saturday vintage base ball games throughout the summer at the Hartford Base Ball Grounds. Coltsville Vintage Base Ball is a thriving element of the Coltsville National Historic District, soon to be National Park.
Goldberg-O’Maxfield has appeared on ESPN providing color commentary for the first nationally televised vintage base ball game in 2004. He was featured in a MLB.com Emmy Award nominated documentary on Vintage Base Ball that same year. O’Maxfield is a registered speaker with the Connecticut Commemorates the Civil War Commission and he entertainingly lectures in period costume around New England on baseball history.
